Before- Pre-teach vocabulary by having students skim through the book and finding unfamiliar words. Then having them write them on vocabulary cards and then figuring out the defintions as we read.
During- Have a discussion about the struggles of life in America vs. the struggles of life in Africa.

After- Have a discussion on the choice of helping others vs. taking care of yourself.

Writing Activity- Students can write an essay about the type of person that they think Salva is using support and evidence from the story.
